Ring Forts

Ring Forts are the common name applied to circular constructions built of earth, or stone, often with wooden ramparts and stakes along the upper parapets. They are called variously Ring Fort, Cashel, Caher, Lios, Dun, Rath. Many of these lios or raths retain family names, these were the defended homesteads of the local Gaelic/Celtic farmers, his family, dependents, workers, slaves, etc. some of the raths have retains names of families to this day.

Along the boundary of the townland, Lissalackaun, the route of the Croagh Patrick Heritage trail follows an ancient Tochar. The family name celebrated here is Alligan, the actual fort is across some fields to the north of the trail.

Lisblowick nearby celebrates the Blowick family, indeed Joseph Blowick was a minister for agriculture in the Irish government in the 1940’s.
