Partry – Partraí

Early Christian Site at Lough Mask

The Partraighe Chieftans, whose name the modern village bears, are recorded as paying an annual tribute to the Connaught Kings in the form of ’3 Steeds, 3 Swords, 3 Tunics and 3 Drinking Horns’.

The majestic Partry Mountains sweep along the southern border of the village, protecting Partry and the Tóchar Valley from the ravages of the wild Atlantic gales.

Ancient bards celebrated Partry as:

‘Partry of the shapely hazels’, ‘Partry, land of heroes’ and ‘A cantred full of knotty hazels’/

Kilkieran, a pretty village close to Partry, on the western shores of Lough Carra, retains the restored ruins of St. Kieran’s Church.  A centuries old underwater causeway has been discovered leading into the lake, which also features ‘Crannogs’.

Just west of Partry lies Ballygarry, location of Colmcille’s Well, traditionally celebrated on pattern or ‘Holy’ days.  It was established in the days of the early Christian church by followers of the saint who may have lived on Colmcille’s island in the nearby Lough Mask.
