Hollymount – Maolla

St. Mary's Church

Hollymount is a small quiet country village in South Mayo.  In the past it had a railway station, a local racecourse and was renowned for its fair days.  A wealth of history exists today in the form of ruins, memories and documentation.  The original name was Maolla, which means ‘flat hills’ in Irish.  This was changed to Hollymount when the area was anglicised in the seventeenth century.  It also served as a large market town and was maintained by the Spencer / Lindsays of Hollymount House.

Having missed out on the building boom of the last ten years it still retains much of its old heritage and charm.  A new community centre was built and opened by President Mary Robinson in 1995.
