Ballintubber – Baile an Tobair
Ballintubber is a tranquil rural community featuring the ancient and dramatic Ballintubber Abbey lovingly restored with a simple elegance. The Abbey has been in continuous use for almost 800 years. Founded by Cathal O’Connor, King of Connacht, it is located near the site of the original church built by St. Patrick. St. Finian built the church which gives Church Island on Lough Carra its name. Archaeological investigation confirms the area was cultivated 5,000 years ago, at the same time as the Céide Feilds in North Mayo.
Guided tours unfold the history and stories including the tale of Seán na Sagart, the infamous priest hunter. The Celtic Furrow close by, is a purpose built education and cultural centre that traces our heritage from Neolithic times to the present day.
